SHABBAT SERVICES

"More than Israel has kept the Sabbath, the Sabbath has kept Israel."  This famous quote speaks volumes to us about the importance of Shabbat in our lives.  Amid the chaos and confusion of our busy, technologically pervasive, hectic, and work-driven lives, Shabbat creates for us a sacred space in which we can escape from its daily rigors.  During Shabbat, we truly find shalem (completeness) in our being from all the outside distractions that life provides.  Kehillat Charlotte is a "Shabbat-Centered" community, whereby the weekly Sabbath serves as the paragon for what we are as a Jewish people.  Each week, we come together "in community" to celebrate that greatest of gifts, Shabbat.

KABBALAT SHABBAT

On Friday evenings, at 7:00 p.m., Kehillat Charlotte gathers to welcome the Sabbath with song, prayer, and study.  This intimate, joyous, and holy experience lasts approximately 1 hour with an oneg following.  Once a month, we will engage in a kosher, dairy Shabbat dinner to allow everyone a share in the mitzvah of hachnasat orchim (welcoming of guests) with each other and visitors to our community.

SHABBAT MORNING

Shabbat morning services begin at 9:00 a.m. with a short Torah study on the week's parshah (Torah portion).  Services begin at 9:30 a.m. and usually conclude around 12:00 p.m.  Morning services are a time when we read from the Sefer Torah (Torah Scroll), engage in meaningful, spirit-filled prayer, and listen to a discourse on the week's Parshat ha-Shavuah (Portion of the Week).  It is also a time when members of the community help to lead prayer, read from the Torah and Haftarah, and our b'nai mitzvah students lead us in davening the various parts of the service as part of their training.

HAVDALAH

We hold Havdalah services every 4-6 weeks.  This beautiful ritual allows us to say goodbye to our sacred Sabbath and prepare ourselves to return to the regularity of our secular week.  Please check the website for dates of Havdalah services.
