ABOUT US

OUR VISION

Congregation Kehillat Charlotte is a newly formed Conservative congregation of families and individuals seeking an intimate prayer experience in the heart of Charlotte, NC.  As part of a grass roots effort, Kehillat Charlotte, as its very name indicates, is dedicated to kehillah and interpersonal relationships.  We are a prayer community dedicated to pursuing the truths of G-d and Torah. We believe that EVERYONE has something special to offer the Jewish community, and we are committed to fostering an environment where all may come and be welcomed to discover and strengthen their Jewish identity through prayer, study, social discourse, and cultural events.

HOW WE DIFFER

One of the major ways in which Kehillat Charlotte differs as a community is its commitment to interpersonal development with "no strings attached."  We, as a community, believe that dues need not define our commitment to a community.  As Rabbi Mordecai Findlay once humorously suggested, the people that do G-d's work must be those who are dedicated to doing such with a glad heart.  We want members who are ready to take on the avodah (work) of Jewish community and help strengthen Judaism from within.  Therefore, we do not employ a traditional dues structure for membership at Kehillat Charlotte.  Rather, we rely upon the discretionary generosity of our members to supply us with our financial needs.  Furthermore, our Religious School is based upon the same corresponding principles of discretionary giving.  Parents are asked to make a donation for religious education and b'nai mitzvah training, rather than paying a specific amount for tuition or fees.

EDUCATION

Congregation Kehillat Charlotte is currently in the process of forming a Religious School with Hebrew, Judaics, and Torah/Talmudic education for children.  If you have a child that is in the process of preparing for bar or bat mitzvah, please contact us and we'll be happy to speak with you about how we can help prepare your child at little or no cost to you as a family.

USY & YOUTH

Congregation Kehillat Charlotte has a firm commitment to its youth and to their future as Jews in the 21st century.  As such, CKC is currently forming a new chapter of United Synagogue Youth (USY) to resurrect its existence in the Charlotte area.  If you are interested in joining our newly formed chapter of USY, please send us an email at: kehillat.charlotte.nc@gmail.com

A "COMMUNITY SYNAGOGUE"

One of the many questions people initially ask when a new congregation is being formed involves, "What type of synagogue will you be?"  As Charlotte is a diverse and expanding community, we feel that even though we embrace the tenets of Conservative Judaism, our mission is to be a kehillah for everyone.  After all, we are all part of Am Yisrael (the People of Israel) and, as such, we all come from different philosophies, traditions, opinions, and walks of life.  Therefore, Kehillat Charlotte is endeavoring to become Charlotte's first "Community Synagogue."  It will be a dynamic environment whereby the truths of Torah, which traverse many different traditions may be made apparent to all generations.  We will embrace the traditional elements of our ancestors, while reaching for the future in a 21st century environment.  In other words, Kehillat Charlotte truly offers something for everyone as Charlotte's "Community Synagogue."

Congregation Kehillat Charlotte is currently in the process of applying for affiliation with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ) and should finalize this process in July of 2014.  Upon joining the USCJ, Congregation Kehillat Charlotte will exist as the only "officially" Conservative congregation in the greater Charlotte metro area.
